The system of herbal medicine that developed in China differs in several significant ways from European herbal medicine. The most obvious difference is that the Western herbal tradition focuses on herbs taken by themselves for specific ailments.
In contrast, traditional Chinese herbal medicine makes almost exclusive use of herbal combinations. More importantly, these formulas are not designed to treat symptoms of a specific illness; rather, they are tailored specifically to the individual according to the complex principles of traditional Chinese medicine.
Herbal therapy is important in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for centuries in China, where herbs are considered fundamental therapy for many acute and chronic conditions. Like acupuncture, Chinese herbs can address unhealthy body patterns that manifest in a variety of symptoms and complaints. The aims of Chinese herbal therapy are to help you regain balance in your body and to strengthen your body’s resistance to disease.
Chinese herbs may be used to:

Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as raw dried herbs, powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. At this clinic we focus on the plant-based aspect.

Can I buy Chinese medicine at my local chemist?
There maybe be formulations at your chemist labelled as "Chinese medicine", but a qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner will never use a one-size-fits-all for their patients. A fully qualified practitioner will prescribe a Chinese herbal formula uniquely formulated for your condition. The herbal formula is also adjusted and altered during the recovery phase until the desired health result is achieved.
A lot of diseases or illnesses present with a core set of recognisable indications and symptoms; the original presentation of a particular disease or illness may differ from person to person. For this reason, people with similar health conditions may be provided with considerably different Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions.
