What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture offers a safe and effective approach to pain relief, often with no needles involved!

Here's a breakdown of what to expect during your acupuncture session:

Consultation and Examination (30 minutes):

  • Your acupuncturist will discuss your health concerns and medical history.
  • They may perform a physical examination using traditional techniques like pulse diagnosis and tongue examination.

Treatment Session (45-60 minutes):

  • Your acupuncturist will choose specific acupuncture points based on your needs.
  • Needle Insertion:
    • The needles are incredibly thin, much finer than a hypodermic needle used for blood draws.
    • You may feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation upon insertion, but the process is generally painless.
    • Up to 20 needles may be used in one session.
  • Relaxation: You'll rest comfortably while the needles are in place, typically for 20-40 minutes.
  • Stimulation Techniques:
    • In some cases, the acupuncturist may gently manipulate the needles, use heat therapy (moxibustion), or apply a mild electrical current to enhance the treatment.  These are typically not used during the first session.
  • Needle Removal: Your acupuncturist will gently remove the needles at the end of the session.

The entire initial session typically lasts around 1.5 hours.

Additional Notes:

  • Acupuncture is a personalised medicine. The number and location of needles used, as well as the specific techniques employed, will vary depending on your individual needs.
  • Many patients experience a deep sense of relaxation during acupuncture treatment.

Getting Ready for Your Acupuncture Appointment

Here are some tips to ensure you have a smooth and successful acupuncture visit.
What to Wear:

  • Choose loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your arms, legs, and back.  This will make it easier for the acupuncturist to insert the needles.
  • Optional: If you're comfortable, wear loose-fitting pants or shorts and a tank top for easier access to acupuncture points.
  • Important:  Remember to wear underwear and a bra that can be easily unclasped for back treatments.

Before Your Appointment:

  • Eat a Light Meal:It's best to avoid arriving on an empty stomach,  as this can increase your risk of feeling lightheaded or nauseous during the treatment. However, avoid a heavy meal as well,  as this can make you feel sluggish.
  • Limit Caffeine:  Excessive caffeine intake can interfere with the relaxing effects of acupuncture.
  • Gather Information:
    • Make a list of your current health concerns and symptoms.
    • Write down any questions you have for the acupuncturist.
    • Consider discussing your condition with a friend or family member beforehand,  as their input may help you articulate your concerns more effectively.
  • Medications:
    • Prepare a list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking. This will help the acupuncturist understand your overall health picture and tailor the treatment accordingly.

Why is Preparation Important?Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body as a whole. Having a clear understanding of your symptoms and medical history allows the acupuncturist to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.   The more information you can provide, the better equipped the acupuncturist will be to optimize your acupuncture experience.
Relax and Enjoy!By following these simple tips, you can ensure you are well-prepared for your acupuncture appointment. Remember, acupuncture is a safe and effective approach to managing a variety of health concerns. Relax, ask questions, and get ready to experience the potential benefits of this ancient healing practice.
